Halloween is here, yes! The time of year where freaks, ghosts and zombies rule the earth. Did I scare you yet?
Be aware this post might contain spoilers!

This year we had this idea of going to a scary movie on Halloween to have a taste of fear. The movie we picked was Crimson Peak, a movie that was only just released, right in time for Halloween.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds - and remembers.

The information on the movie:
      • 119 minutes
      • Drama / Fantasy / Horror
      • Director: Guillermo del Toro (Known from “Pan’s Labyrint”, “Pacific Rim”, “Hellboy”)
      • Writers: Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins
      • Stars: Mia Wasikowska (Known for “Alice in Wonderland”), Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston (Known for “The Avengers” & “Thor”), Charlie Hunnam (Known for “Sons of Anarchy” & “Pacific Rim”),…
On IMDb the movie got a 7.1 rating so we thought it would be the perfect movie to end Halloween with. But what captured me the most was the trailer:

Upon arriving at the movies we noticed that the theater crew had dressed up for Halloween. And even though it didn't really look professionally done, it was a nice though in order to get in the mood for the occasion.

The movie was programmed in one of the smaller theater, but yet people still succeeded in arriving after the movie had already started.

Now onto the movie: In the first part of the movie I basically set there and waited for the scary stuff to happen. The director tried to sketch you the history of each of the characters. For instance Edith, one of the main female characters is trying to sell her book as female author in 1887, which is basically a men’s world. Meanwhile Sir Thomas Sharpe is looking for sponsors to fund his mining machine, trying to charm his way to Edith’s father wallet and to Edith’s heart. When Edith’s father passes brutally away, Edith tries to leave the ghosts of her past behind her by fleeting into Thomas Sharpe’s arms, leaving everything behind, searching for a new start, unknowing that her nightmares are only just beginning.

The director Guillermo Tores presents us a love story with a sick twist, blending the horros from reality and the spiritual world together. It is not a typical horror movie like “The Exorcist” or “Psycho”, but there was great detail for costumes and the scenery, and an amazing use of colors. Especially the details of The Sharpe’s mansion was amazing and of course the mind twister where leaves keep falling through the roof while there are no trees anywhere near the mansion.

I have to say Jessica Chastain is the one who stole the show, she plays Sir Thomas Sharpe’s sister. She could switch up from loving sister to mentally insane in the blink of an eye. She was cold, devious, scary, mysterious and seductive. This is an actress who was unknown to me but I believe we will hear more from her.

I didn’t really fall in love with this movie, but I quiet enjoyed the movie. My greatest complaint is that it appears that all the scary parts are already shown in the trailer and the movie doesn’t really scare you anymore. But the movie is very enchanting and submerges you into the Victorian era with lovely costumes and habits from back in the day.

How this story end? Well you will have to watch the movie to discover!
